An SR22 bond policy is a filing, files by a car insurance provider in your state. This form is used to prove that you have the required liability insurance in your state.  This is generally mandated to confirm to the state your financial responsibility when operating a car after getting a citation for a DUI / DWI or non insurance.

States mandate financial responsibility requirements and you need to be able to provide proof financial responsibility every time you drive a vehicle.

Most states permit at least 1 of the following items to be used as your financial responsibility:

1. Auto insurance policy
2. Surety bond

Reader’s Question:

An employee in our company does not own a car but sometimes drives the company car. Can he get a non-owners insurance policy? How much would that cost?

Megan

Detroit MI

Yes he can. It’s actually a good idea to get a non-owners insurance policy for anyone who doesn’t own a car and can drive. At one point or another you have borrowed someone else’s car so you need to be sure that you are covered. There is a non-owner insurance available that gives a motorist, who does not own a car, liability protection when they are at fault in an accident or causing damage to a property, thing or even a person while driving a car that is not yours. Usually this kind of policy includes injuries and damage to properties liability. Medical payments maybe included as well depending on the insurance company. A lot of non-owner policies do not include collision or towing reimbursement because you will need a specific car to put the coverage on.

The price of non-owners insurance policy depends on the insurance company. It will also depend on the coverage of your policy. They will take a look at your record as well, if you’re a high risk or low risk. You may want to ask around so you can compare prices and choose the best non-owner insurance policy that suites you. People trying to get information especially regarding the risk program usually receive a reply right away. In case you don’t get a reply regarding these things, you may file a complaint with the state board of insurances. All of us are entitled to get coverage. It doesn’t matter if you’re an owner or a non-owner.

If you are about 24 years old and do not have any violations, a non-owners insurance policy may cost about $200-$700 per year. This amount is also affected by the requirements of the state on what the minimum coverage may be and the rating guidelines of the insurance company. This kind of policy is cheaper because you are at low risk, not having your own vehicle to drive whenever you need to.

Reader’s Question:

What affects my auto insurance cost?

Maia

Las Vegas NV

One is the driver which can be you – the policyholder or the would-be policyholder. Your personal factors can affect your auto insurance cost such as age, gender, credit history, driving record etc.

The second main factor that can affect your auto insurance cost is your car. If you are going to get comprehensive and collision coverage, your type of car can greatly affect your insurance cost. Having expensive high-end car means it is expensive to repair and it will cost a lot to be replaced. As such, this kind of car can give you a high premium compared to modest sedan or minivan type of cars.

Cars that often show up in the crime bureau’s list of top types of cars being stolen are expensive to insure too. It is because car insurance company puts a premium to its being high risk for theft.

The third main factor that can affect your auto insurance cost is the coverage you want to include in your policy. If you want a low insurance cost, then just buy the basic minimum coverage required by your state’s law – which are bodily injury and property damage liabilities coverage. These 2 required coverage will answer the injuries and damages you and your car cause to innocent third parties.

Of course there is always trade off in getting a cheaper insurance, which is it might not be able to cover the overall cost in case you hit a person or another car. Basic required insurance coverage does not cover the expenses incur from mishaps to which you are at fault of. As such, you might need to shell off from your own pocket. If you want to avoid this, then you need to increase your coverage and get other types of coverage – like collision and comprehensive coverage.

Reader’s Question:

My father has been advised to buy SR22 insurance and he had been asking me what is SR22 all about, but I myself does not actually know what is it though I have heard about it a lot of times from my friends here in California, Why does a driver in California have to buy SR22 Insurance?

Jed

Bakersfield, CA

You need to buy SR22 Insurance if you been violating numerous traffic violations or had been caught driving without car insurance and had your driver’s license suspended. This type of insurance is like the state’s watchdog for it keeps you a closer eye and make sure that you are keeping the state’s required minimum coverage. Certain individuals are required to carry this kind of insurance like for those who were convicted of DUI they need to have SR22 for a period of time. Aside from DUI, a person is also required to carry this kind of insurance if a driver has filled his or her record with different traffic violations and his or her driver’s licensed is suspended and need to buy SR22 insurance for the driver’s licensed be reinstated.

SR22 is different from other ordinary type insurance coverage for the insurance company must report to the license bureau if there was a lapse in coverage. This only mean that when you buy SR22 insurance you need to continue it for if you have cancelled it, your insurance company will notify the license bureau and your driver’s license will be suspended again until you continue SR22 insurance. A California driver needs to buy SR22 insurance so that the driver will still be allowed to drive in case of violations or accidents or in other cases, can get car insurance.
